FIELD TRIPS
Denver Mountain Park
This field trip will take place at Daniels Park, located approximately 25 miles south of downtown Denver. Situated at the intersection of Colorado’s High Plains, Southern Rockies, and Southwestern Tablelands ecoregions, Daniels Park encompasses a diverse landscape with expansive views extending from Pikes Peak to Wyoming’s Snowy Range on clear days.
The park is home to one of the City of Denver’s two bison herds, as well as the TallBull Memorial Grounds, an area reserved for Native American use. The field trip will highlight ongoing efforts to expand bison pasture onto the neighboring Highlands Ranch Backcountry Wilderness Area and explore several unique ecological stewardship activities taking place across the site. These include bison grazing, native dung beetle breeding and release, backcountry erosion control, scrub oak management, and invasive weed control.
In addition to ecological restoration efforts, attendees will learn about a newly established Medicine Wheel garden and the growing collaboration among Denver Parks and Recreation, Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, and the TallBull Memorial Council. Together, these efforts demonstrate an integrated approach to ecological stewardship, conservation, and cultural collaboration.
